Priorities for 2011
The Group met on the 20th September 2010 and agreed that the following areas in Burnside would have priority in the next season of activity – spring 2011.
1 Greystone Avenue / Stonelaw Road junction – Burnside Gateway

Having received sponsorship from Fosters Funeral Directors the next stage in the Burnside Gateway development will be to expand the decorative planting there and to locate some sort of a ‘Welcome’ message at this crucial location. Again the help of students from Langside College Horticultural Department is promised and we look forward to this partnership in the long term.
The nature of the ‘welcome’ message will be the subject of a competition for school children in the area but will build on the flora display established over the years by the South Lanarkshire Council and added to thanks to generous donations from local residents and businesses this year. Initial sketch of the message ‘board’ is shown above. The board to be fixed to the pavement and surrounded by floral displays.
2 Stonelaw Road shops
The traders in Burnside have been – to some extent – supportive of our aims. However with the success of the hanging baskets and of the Gateway display, we will approach all of the traders with very attractive hanging baskets ‘packages’ which we hope many more will accept. Success breads success they say.
3 Railway Embankment
The state of the railway embankment, such a prominent part of Burnside, is a scandal which we must address. Putting pressure on First Scotrail and volunteering to do positive things like planting more bulbs and decorative bushes will be major focus of our activities in 2011.
4 Gala Day 21 May 2011
A Gala day is planned in Stonelaw Woods park which if as successful as in previous years will not only give Burnside a great day of fun and entertainment but will also provide a source of funds for the 2012 season of Burnside in Bloom.
