Burnside does us proud!

Thanks to the customers of Tesco Burnside last Saturday, Burnside in Bloom raised £770 at the bag packing event!

This cash will go towards funds for the 2013 season.

We were very grateful for the continued support of Fosters Funeral Directory of Stonewall Road and f0r their cheque for £500.

Burnside Primary School – Art Project

Watch this space for the results of an art project based on Burnside in Bloom and involving pupils at Burnside Primary.

Examples of the best work will be exhibited at Tesco Burnside during our bag packing day on Saturday 31st March.

Thank you Lads and Lassies of the Payback Unit

 

What a difference the Payback team have made. Here are two pictures taken after they blitzed the verge at Duke’s Road.
The before picture was too awful to include here.  The Burnside Community Council are extremely grateful for the rapid response
to our request for a litter pick and for the hard work of the young people and their supervisors.

This shows the partnership between the Community Council, Network Rail and the South Lanarkshire Council in action.

Burnside in Bloom is “thriving” say Beautiful Scotland.

Burnside in Bloom has been given a ‘thriving’ Level 4 award. Just 6 points short of a Level 5 ‘outstanding’ score – the top award.

This after just 2 years says a lot for the partnership of folk and organisations around Burnside.

The judges assessment shows where and how we scored:

Section A – Community Participation (40% or 40 points)
The group is working towards things such as:Being inclusive of local peopleLocal ownership and directionMaking a difference to local people

Involving local people with planning, decision-making, communication & implementation

Representative of the local community

Level achieved  Thriving
Areas of achievement: This is a compact area with a railway station and shops on both sides of the main street. The group has adopted the railway station and has positioned well maintained flower barrels on the platform. Support from the local businesses is very evident with hanging baskets outside 90% of the shops; the majority cared for by the group. Their pride and joy is the Burnside Gateway planter and sign, again sponsored by a local business. They could demonstrate partnership working with the local College, Secondary and Primary Schools and the Police. The area was very clean, with no evidence of litter, graffiti or dog fouling. The local community gets involved with events such as the Gala day.
Areas for development: Whilst they are planning for the spring they are quite rightly very pleased to be able to announce that they have secured commitment from the rail company to tackle an unsightly railway embankment where they have plans to increase commitment to biodiversity.
