Burnside in Bloom is “thriving” say Beautiful Scotland.

Burnside in Bloom has been given a ‘thriving’ Level 4 award. Just 6 points short of a Level 5 ‘outstanding’ score – the top award.

This after just 2 years says a lot for the partnership of folk and organisations around Burnside.

GRAND TOTAL POINTS ASSESSED 79
Level achieved  Thriving
Areas of achievement: This is a compact area with a railway station and shops on both sides of the main street. The group has adopted the railway station and has positioned well maintained flower barrels on the platform. Support from the local businesses is very evident with hanging baskets outside 90% of the shops; the majority cared for by the group. Their pride and joy is the Burnside Gateway planter and sign, again sponsored by a local business. They could demonstrate partnership working with the local College, Secondary and Primary Schools and the Police. The area was very clean, with no evidence of litter, graffiti or dog fouling. The local community gets involved with events such as the Gala day.
Areas for development: Whilst they are planning for the spring they are quite rightly very pleased to be able to announce that they have secured commitment from the rail company to tackle an unsightly railway embankment where they have plans to increase commitment to biodiversity.

Burnside Station Embankment – Its looking better!

The 5th October was a red letter day when Network Rail staff and Community Payback lads descended on the ‘wilderness’ at Dukes Road. Working together the jungle was tamed. Well done everybody!

Welcome to BURNSIDE : A good response to the new display.

The enhanced Burnside Gateway display has had a few weeks to mature. The display has been widely welcomed by residents and visitors alike. Some of the Burnside in Bloom group had a weeding session on 6th August to get the display back to looking its best.

Burnside is Blooming better in 2011

The programme of hanging baskets in Stonelaw Road and Dukes Road has – eventually – proved to be even better than last year. Despite the lack of rain and sun early on in the season the basket displays have  come good.

You may have notice more baskets this year. 37 were sponsored by traders and BiB combined. Up by a good 50 % from last year. There were some disappointments however. A small number of traders are holding out, refusing the get involved. Some of them are finding trading conditions difficult. Others however just arn’t getting it! You will be able to spot them yourself!
